The Address Council (or AC) is to serve as the policy advisory body of the Address Supporting Organisation (ASO) of ICANN, whose formation was approved by the ICANN Board at its August Meeting in Santiago, Chile. As a member of the ASO and future signatory to the ASO MoU, APNIC has taken responsibility for the Address Council appointment process in the Asia Pacific region, through its Executive Council, the elected body which represents the interests of over 350 APNIC Member organisations in the region. The APNIC Executive Council has been mindful of very short timeline imposed by ICANN itself (namely that ASO Board members of ICANN must be nominated by the Address Council to ICANN by mid-October), and also of the lack of suitable opportunities (such as scheduled regional Internet conferences) for open ASO meetings to be held during the short selection period. Therefore, the path chosen by the APNIC EC for appointment of the AC members (as described in the 7 September announcement) has involved a widely-announced public nomination process, with the opportunity for public statements of support for candidates, followed by a selection of candidates by the EC itself according to published selection criteria. These criteria included the individual's experience in serving the Internet community in the Asia Pacific region, familiarity with the intended roles of ICANN and the ASO, familiarity with the role of APNIC, residence in the Asia Pacific region, support from the individual's employer to the time and resource commitment required to discharge the duties of this role, and geographic diversity of the three individuals from within the Asia Pacific region. Since the close of nominations on 28 September, the APNIC EC has considered carefully the group of 7 candidates nominated, and has arrived at its decision. Taking all factors into account, the EC has selected the following 3 individuals to serve on the Address Council: Takashi Arano, NTT, Japan For a term of 3 years; Jianping Wu, CERNET, China For a term of 2 years; Hyun Je Park, Thrunet, Korea For a term of 1 year. The APNIC Executive Council would like to congratulate all individuals who were nominated to the Address Council, and commend the successful appointees. We hope that all interested parties and individuals in this region will join us in supporting the selected individuals, and the Address Council itself, in the challenging work which lies ahead. Best regards Paul Wilson Director General, APNIC For the APNIC Executive Council: Dr Tommi Chen, the Network Connections, Malaysia (Chair); Che-Hoo Cheng, Chinese University of Hong Kong (Secretary); Toru Takahashi, Tokyo Internet Corporation (Treasurer); Geoff Huston, Telstra, Australia; Xing Li, CERNET, China; Oh Kwang Sok, National Computerization Agency, Korea; Kuo-Wei Wu, Yam Digital Technology, Taiwan. * APNIC-ANNOUNCE: Announcements concerning APNIC * * To unsubscribe, send "unsubscribe" to apnic-announce-request@apnic.net * From owner-apnic-announce@ns.apnic.net Mon Oct 11 00:36:47 1999 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by ns.apnic.net (8.9.1a/8.9.1) id AAA07658; Mon, 11 Oct 1999 00:23:43 GMT Received: from int-gw.staff.apnic.net (guardian.apnic.net [203.37.255.100]) by ns.apnic.net (8.9.1a/8.9.1) with ESMTP id AAA07654 for ; Mon, 11 Oct 1999 00:23:42 GMT Received: (from mail@localhost) by int-gw.staff.apnic.net (8.9.1a/8.9.1) id AAA19532 for ; Mon, 11 Oct 1999 00:23:42 GMT Received: from hadrian.staff.apnic.net(192.168.1.1) by int-gw.staff.apnic.net via smap (V2.1) id xma019529; Mon, 11 Oct 99 10:23:21 +1000 Received: from compiler.staff.apnic.net (compiler.staff.apnic.net [192.168.1.39]) by hadrian.staff.apnic.net (8.9.1a/8.9.1) with ESMTP id AAA15018 for ; Mon, 11 Oct 1999 00:23:19 GMT Date: Mon, 11 Oct 1999 10:23:21 +1000 (EST) From: Paul Gampe X-Sender: paulg@compiler.staff.apnic.net To: apnic-announce@ns.apnic.net Subject: [apnic-announce] Maintenance Announcement: October 16th 8:00 - 12:00 UTC+10 Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Sender: owner-apnic-announce@apnic.net Precedence: bulk Reply-To: apnic-talk@apnic.net [Note "reply-to:" field] Dear APNIC Member, APNIC will be upgrading the primary whois server, whois.apnic.net during the Saturday October 16th maintenance window between 8:00 - 12:00 UTC+10. We have automated some parts of the evaluation procedure with the aim of reducing the total time taken to process AS requests. The new procedure will involve parsing of the AS number request form, giving real-time automated responses from APNIC regarding the syntactic and semantic correctness of the submitted request form. In addition to the parser, a web version of the AS number request form will also be made available. Both the web form and the AS request form parser will go live on Monday 1 November 1999. Using the parser is not mandatory for the first 3 months of deployment until 1 February 2000. For those who do not wish to make use of the functionality, it will be necessary to include the following subject heading in the subject line of the request: Subject: [NO-PARSE] (in addition to any other information such as Member name) The existing text form "APNIC-66 Autonomous System Number Request Form" will continue to remain available. Current System -------------- Currently, the process of obtaining AS numbers from APNIC involves the following steps: 1. AS Number requests are submitted by email containing a completed text version of the request form. 2. Syntactical and semantical errors are manually verified by APNIC staff through an iterative process between APNIC and the requestor. The turnaround time on mail received by the APNIC hostmaster is 2 working days. 3. AS Numbers are assigned or rejected by APNIC staff. New System ---------- With the new system, the process of obtaining AS Numbers will involve the following steps: 1. AS Number request forms will be submitted to the parser via web form or via email to . 2. If the AS Number request is submitted via the web form then it will be parsed and the errors will be output during submission. If the AS Number request is via email an automatic response will be sent to the requestor's email address. 3. (a & b) (a) If a request is not successfully parsed, an output detailing the errors and requirements will be displayed (if the web form was used) or emailed to the requestor in ascii format (if email form was used). Errors should then be corrected and resubmitted. (b) After successful parsing, the request will be forwarded to and an AS Number can be assigned with minimum delays. Procedural Changes ------------------ There are no procedural changes as such because the same information is collected, and checks will be conducted as previously. More information regarding the AS number request parser and AS number request web form will be available on our website next week. We would welcome any feedback from members on the interface of both the AS parser and the web form.
