The motivation for the SIGs is to provide an open public forum to discuss topics of interest to APNIC and the Internet community in the Asia Pacific region. There are five proposed SIG topics around which the discussions will focus. These are Address Policy, Routing, DNS, Security in the APNIC database, and IPv6. Each meeting will work to an agenda, which will provide a framework for discussion and comment. Discussion papers on specific agenda items will be released at least one month before the meeting (where relevant). We anticipate that each SIG group will provide a series of recommendations to be presented at the Annual APNIC Member Meeting. The membership will then have the opportunity to consider these recommendations with a view to initiating or modifying policy. Where time is not available, further discussion of topics and will be conducted on-line. APNIC would like to invite all members of the Internet community to provide feedback and comment on the draft agendas outlined below. In all cases we would welcome constructive comment and feedback on the suggested discussion items. Discussion will take place on the "apnic-talk" mailing list. To subscribe to that list, send an email to with the words "subscribe apnic-talk" in the body of the message. This is your forum to shape the future direction of policy in the Asia Pacific region! Following feedback and review from the community, the document was amended and jointly released on 14 July 1999. (see http://www.apnic.net/drafts/ipv6/ipv6-policy-280599.html). The policies contained in that document are the result of a collaborative effort of the RIRs and their respective communities to provide a responsible, globally consistent framework for the management of IPv6 address space. In July 1999, on the basis of that document, IANA made the first formal delegations of IPv6 address space to the RIRs. A formal review of the document was scheduled to start in October 1999, so that early experiences of IPv6 operation and administration could be fully evaluated and any necessary amendments made. APNIC now calls for comments to assist in this first review. We encourage you, as a member of the Internet community, to re-visit this document and we invite you to make any comments you feel would be constructive to the development of the next version. In particular, APNIC seeks your comments on the following sections of the document: * 4.2.3.2 Multihomed Sites This section was left unwritten in the first release, as there was insufficient experience to draw on in formulating a policy. We encourage any members of the community who have operational experience or interest in IPv6 and multi-homing to contribute suggestions for this section. * 4.2.8 Allocations to NLA Registries * 4.3.1 Assignments to End-users Review of these two sections is sought from members of the community who have relevant operational experience. * Definition of 'transit provider' A definition for the above term was not included in the current document. Comments and suggestions for an appropriate definition are encouraged. Finally, we also encourage you to consider the "IPv6 sub-TLA Request Form" (http://www.apnic.net/apnic-bin/ipv6-subtla-request.pl) and provide any comments or suggestions for improvements. PLEASE SEND COMMENTS BY FRIDAY 21ST JANUARY 2000. Discussion will take place on the "ipv6-registry" mailing list. To subscribe to that list, send an email to with the words "subscribe ipv6-registry" in the body of the message. As relatively few volunteers have come forward from the Asia Pacific region, I am circulating the announcement again. If you are interested in participating, please note that there are only 5 days remaining in which to nominate. What will it do? The Membership Implementation Task Force will play a key role in ICANN's effort to create a broad, diverse, and globally representative At Large Membership, through which 9 of ICANN's 19 Directors will be elected. The Membership Implementation Task Force was chartered by the ICANN Board at its August and November meetings. The Board charged the Membership Implementation Task Force with the following responsibilities: "RESOLVED [99.144], that the President and CEO is directed to convene a Membership Implementation Task Force, which shall generate and implement strategies for outreach and recruitment of a broad and numerous membership that is globally representative of the Internet user community; design effective membership authentication and online election procedures; and undertake such other membership implementation responsibilities as may be assigned to it by the Board or the President." The Membership Implementation Task Force is thus intended to be a body of active and committed "do-ers" who will work to make the goal of a broad, diverse, and globally representative At Large Membership a reality. More specifically, its responsibilities will include the following: - developing and implementing outreach and recruitment strategies; - investigating, designing, testing, and implementing effective registration and election mechanisms, including membership authentication and online voting procedures; - assisting with the organization of the At Large Council; - planning for independent oversight of the initial At Large Council election; and - proposing a permanent funding mechanism for the At Large Membership. o How will the Membership Implementation Task Force do its work? As with most ICANN bodies, the bulk of the Membership Implementation Task Force's work will be done through the Internet, via email and the web. Periodic teleconferences may be necessary as well. The Membership Implementation Task Force will have a chair, and will also include a number of small, narrowly-focused task groups, such as task groups on voting systems, election oversight, and outreach to specific regions. The Membership Implementation Task Force will have staff support from ICANN's Membership Project Manager. o I'm interested! How do I submit my statement of interest? Expressions of interest (and any questions) should be sent to Andrew McLaughlin . Statements need not be longer than 100 words, and should include information about your professional background and the contribution you will make toward the work of the Membership Implementation Task Force. The deadline for expressions of interest is December 21, 1999. o Background on ICANN At Large Membership For more on the background, history, and current implementation plans for ICANN's At Large Membership, see . * APNIC-ANNOUNCE: Announcements concerning APNIC * * To unsubscribe, send "unsubscribe" to apnic-announce-request@apnic.net * From owner-apnic-announce@lists.apnic.net Wed Dec 22 17:40:07 1999 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by whois.apnic.net (8.9.3/8.9.3) id RAA95801; Wed, 22 Dec 1999 17:40:01 +1000 (EST) Received: from guardian.apnic.net (guardian.apnic.net [203.37.255.100]) by whois.apnic.net (8.9.3/8.9.3) with ESMTP id RAA95794 for ; Wed, 22 Dec 1999 17:39:59 +1000 (EST) Received: (from mail@localhost) by guardian.apnic.net (8.9.3/8.9.3) id RAA20212 for ; Wed, 22 Dec 1999 17:39:59 +1000 (EST) From: secretariat@apnic.net Received: from hadrian.staff.apnic.net(192.168.1.1) by int-gw.staff.apnic.net via smap (V2.1) id xma020210; Wed, 22 Dec 99 17:39:49 +1000 Received: from compiler.staff.apnic.net (compiler.staff.apnic.net [192.168.1.39]) by hadrian.staff.apnic.net (8.9.3/8.9.3) with ESMTP id RAA08520 for ; Wed, 22 Dec 1999 17:39:47 +1000 (EST) Date: Wed, 22 Dec 1999 17:39:48 +1000 (EST) X-Sender: paulg@compiler.staff.apnic.net To: apnic-announce@lists.apnic.net Subject: [apnic-announce] Draft APNIC Reverse DNS Delegation Form Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Sender: owner-apnic-announce@lists.apnic.net Precedence: bulk Reply-To: apnic-talk@apnic.net [Note "reply-to:" field] ----------------------------------------------------------------------- APNIC Document Revision Announcement CALL FOR COMMENTS * Draft APNIC Reverse DNS Delegation Form [to replace APNIC-064] Deadline for comments: Wednesday 12 January 2000 ----------------------------------------------------------------------- APNIC is pleased to release the draft APNIC Reverse DNS Delegation Form. This form is to be used to provide information to APNIC for the sub-delegation of in-addr.arpa and ip6.int domains, which allows for the mapping of IP addresses into domain names. Previously, reverse DNS requests were made with APNIC-064 (ftp://ftp.apnic.net/apnic/archive/apnic-064.txt). However, with the recent introduction of an automated reverse DNS system at APNIC, it has become necessary to revise that form. The new draft form is available in text format at: http://ftp.apnic.net/apnic/drafts/reverse-dns We encourage all members and other interested parties to review this draft and send any comments and suggestions you may have to the mailing list. By making this call for proposals, APNIC hopes to identify a meeting opportunity which minimises cost to members in time and travel expense, which maximises attendance through co-ordination with other Internet-related events, and which takes advantage of local sponsorship and support where available. Therefore, criteria for selection of a meeting date and venue will include: - Accessibility to APNIC members located throughout the AP region - Co-location of the meeting with significant Internet-related event - Availability of local logistical support for organising the meeting - Degree of sponsorship support able to be arranged by the meeting host The meeting is expected to run for 2 days, and involve 50-100 participants. The agenda (which is still to be developed) is likely to involve both plenary, and small group sessions (up to 4 groups running in parallel). Proposals may be submitted by APNIC Member organisations, or by any organisation with an interest in supporting APNIC activities. It should be noted that provision of financial support by the proponent is not a necessary part of any proposal. This year we are expecting between 500-800 engineers and executives to attend the event, which will be held at the Sheraton Walker Hill Hotel in Seoul (http://www.walkerhill.co.kr). This year, we have orchestrated a full APRICOT Fellowship Programme to allow for more delegates from developing markets to attend -- so far we have received 66 applications from 33 countries! Sponsors can earmark 10% of the financial sponsorship contribution to support this Fellowship Programme The final Call for Speakers has been recently issued (please contact Robert Berger rberger@ibd.com if you would like to speak or present at the event). Please see http://www.apricot2000.ne.kr for details concerning APRICOT2000 including the Sponsorship Invitation and Agreement. [Note: there are three sponsorship categories Platinum (US$ 20,000), Gold (US$ 10,000) and Silver (US$ 5,000) -- with a 25% discount for Early Bird sponsors before 11th January. All hospitality suites are allocated on a first-come-first-served basis] As far as APRICOT2001, the Request For Proposals to host the event is now available from the http://www.apricot.net website. Once again, thank you for your interest and generous support of APRICOT (the Asia Pacific Regional Internet Conference on Operational Technologies) -- the region's premier Internet Operations forum. Looking forward to seeing you all in Seoul! Yours sincerely, Pindar Wong Chairman APRICOT2000 Executive Committee ******************************** CALL FOR INSTRUCTORS, SESSION CHAIRS and SPEAKERS: APRICOT2000 http://www.apricot2000.ne.kr Last year's Apricot '99 in Singapore was a great success and the upcoming Apricot 2000 in Seoul is looking to be even bigger and more impactful. We are now looking for people who would like to contribute to the program in the form of offering a full day tutorial and/or participating in the 1.5 hour technical conference sessions (each speaker would get 20 - 30 minutes). As we get back the responses to this mailing, the conference committee will make a mapping of people to tracks/sessions and thus the final technical program. So if you are interested in participating, please get back to us ASAP (before Dec 24th) as to your interest and potential talk titles as we expect to make the final decisions in early January. When considering a subject, remember that the audience is mainly technical network operators and engineers with a wide range of experience levels from beginners to multi-year experience. There is a strong orientation to offer core skills and basic knowledge in the tutorials and to address issues relevant to the day-to-day operations of ISPs over the next 12 - 18 months. The technical conference sessions we are looking for people to act as session chairs and to speak on are: - High Performance IP Backbone Routing and management - Content Distribution Networks, Streaming and Multimedia Infrastructure - Unified Messaging, EMail scaling, SPAM - Voice over IP and Voice/ Internet Infrastructure Integration - Security, Encryption, Firewalls, VPNs - QoS, Traffic Management, MPLS, Multicast and Caching - Peering, Settlements and Collocation - Alternative Last Mile Connectivity (xDSL, Wireless, Cable) - ISP Management - ASP Opportunities and Technologies - Network Game Technologies The sessions are 1.5 hours long and the individual session talks will be from 15 minutes to 45 minutes depending on how many other speakers are in the same session. The content and presenter must be of a technical nature and not delivering a superficial marketing or commercial message. We still have several tutorial slots open, so if you would like to give one of the full day tutorials, please submit it. Tutorial Instructors are encouraged to also sign up to be a Conference Session Chair or speaker as well. The tutorial topics that still need to be covered are: - Voice over IP Standards, Efforts and Impacts on ISPs - Network Security for ISPs - Computer Telephony Integration and Voice over IP for ISPs - ISP System Administration - Scaling E-mail infrastructure - Supporting E-Commerce and ASPs - Last Mile Innovations: Wireless, xDSL and Cable Modem Though there are a limited number of tutorial slots there may be one or two openings for something that is not listed above. If you have an idea for a tutorial subject that is not listed, please submit it. IMPORTANT NOTE: ALL SPEAKERS AND PRESENTATIONS MUST BE OF A TECHNICAL NATURE AND NOT MARKETING MESSAGES OR DELIVERED BY MARKETEERS or SALESPEOPLE! This is a TECHNICAL conference and having a marketing or sales person deliver a superficial or commercial presentation will be bad for the reputation of your company and degrade the focus of the conference. Besides the content of the presentation being technical it is important that the presenter be capable of delivering insightful and technically deep responses in question and answer periods that will be part of all sessions. Since APRICOT is a not-for-profit event that tries to keep the cost to attendees low, we do not have too much money to pay the costs of speakers. So if you belong to a company or organization that can cover you travel expenses, that is a big help. For those of you who do not belong to such an organization, Apricot will cover 4 days of hotel accommodation for Tutorial Instructors from Overseas. Apricot can also consider covering airfare up to US$1500 on a case by case basis. Local Tutorial Instructors can receive a US$500 honorarium but no Hotel accommodations. It is ok to split the work of a full day tutorial between several instructors, but APRICOT may only be able to cover the hotel accommodations and case by case airfare for one person per Tutorial. Of course, Tutorial, Conference Chairs and Speakers will not have to pay any registration fee to attend the rest of the conference. If you would like to be considered as a Session chair, tutorial instructor or a session speaker, please send your contact info, proposed tutorial or talk title with a brief abstract in ASCII, RTF, PDF format via email to: Robert J. Berger - Technical Conference Chair Voice: +1-408-882-4755 Fax: +1-408-490-2868 mailto:rjbApricot@ibd.com You can also send any questions to the above email or phone as well as to: JongWon Choe Technical Conference Co-Chair mailto:choejn@sookmyung.ac.kr More information on the conference will be made available at http://www.apricot2000.ne.kr If you are not the right person from your organization to speak at such a technical conference or if you are not available, please forward this invitation onto someone who might be available and would be appropriate for the APRICOT conference. ========================================== * APNIC-ANNOUNCE: Announcements concerning APNIC * * To unsubscribe, send "unsubscribe" to apnic-announce-request@apnic.net * From owner-apnic-announce@lists.apnic.net Wed Dec 29 15:29:02 1999 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by whois.apnic.net (8.9.3/8.9.3) id PAA77263; Wed, 29 Dec 1999 15:28:55 +1000 (EST) Received: from guardian.apnic.net (guardian.apnic.net [203.37.255.100]) by whois.apnic.net (8.9.3/8.9.3) with ESMTP id PAA77233; Wed, 29 Dec 1999 15:28:50 +1000 (EST) Received: (from mail@localhost) by guardian.apnic.net (8.9.3/8.9.3) id PAA13154; Wed, 29 Dec 1999 15:28:48 +1000 (EST) From: secretariat@apnic.net Received: from hadrian.staff.apnic.net(192.168.1.1) by int-gw.staff.apnic.net via smap (V2.1) id xma013146; Wed, 29 Dec 99 15:28:41 +1000 Received: from compiler.staff.apnic.net (compiler.staff.apnic.net [192.168.1.39]) by hadrian.staff.apnic.net (8.9.3/8.9.3) with ESMTP id PAA01343; Wed, 29 Dec 1999 15:25:30 +1000 (EST) Date: Wed, 29 Dec 1999 15:28:39 +1000 (EST) X-Sender: paulg@compiler.staff.apnic.net To: apnic-announce@lists.apnic.net, members@lists.apnic.net Subject: [apnic-announce] CFP: in the Address Policy SIG Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Sender: owner-apnic-announce@lists.apnic.net Precedence: bulk Reply-To: apnic-talk@apnic.net [Note "reply-to:" field] Call For Presentations in the Address Policy SIG: December 24, 1999 Address Policy SIG Chair Takashi Arano The Address Policy SIG will be held in Seoul on March 2, 2000 during the APRICOT week.
