With the participation of the Institute of Islamic Studies, McGill University ICMI Montawa will hold an International Conference in McGill University, Montreal, Canada on the above theme for which we have identified four avenues. Please note that authors of abstracts and papers are asked to adopt a practical and direct approach in dealing with this theme. By governance, we mean: the manner in which power is exercised by government in the management of the country's social and economic resources. Good governance is the exercise of power by various levels of government that is effective, honest, quitable, transparent and accountable. See homepage 4 areas will be covered during the Virtual and Face-to-face conferences. These are: Theme No. 1 : Lessons learnt from previous governments. This forum involves revisiting what we have learnt from past mistakes, challenging the negative impact of an authoritarian government, strong control and centralization, unsound actions and manners, and outdated system of governing, ... Theme No. 2. The approach of the current government (President Habibie and the Reformation Cabinet). This forum includes topics such as the people response to Reformation in fields such as Law, Bureaucracy, Electoral procedure, People's representation, Education, Constitutional Review, Civil Society, Democracy, Environment, Gender, etc. Theme No. 3. The contribution of religious groups. This forum revolves around the future contribution of Islam and other faith to bringing about good governance practises in Indonesia. As opposed to theoretical concepts, implementation and down to earth solutions will be considered. Theme No. 4. Future activities: a workable solution (post-General Elections). This forum will look at applying the lessons we have learnt over the years to new development policies in order to provide recommendation to the next Indonesian General Assembly, including on the next five-year development plan, the outline of national policy, etc. While we expect that themes underlined will both include the various concerns of good governance and reflect the interdisciplinary nature of the International Conference, we welcome postings, abstracts or papers that fall outside the range of themes as we would like the conference to catalyze a stimulating discussion and new down to earth ideas. To register, to attend or to present a paper at the Virtual Conference or at the Face-to-face Conference, visit our homepage at: http://www.geocities.com/CapeCanaveral/Hall/4493/ By registering to the Virtual Conference, you will receive, by e-mail, all the papers presented at the Virtual Conference, will join a discussion group and will be able to participation in the discussion.
