You could always pull down a copy of an appropriate apnic db and sort the inetnum or aut-num object by country (country was a mandatory field last time I looked). For example, with ftp://ftp.apnic.net/pub/apnic/dbase/data/apnic.an.gz you could use the following to list all ASNs tagged with country: SG: gzip -cd apnic.an.gz | \ awk '/^\*an: / { asn = $2; } /^\*cy: SG/ { print asn; }' Actually, now that I have typed that, I see there are lots of aut-num objects in the database without country: fields... And it's not sufficient to look for -SG endings on tech contacts or paintenance objects, by the looks of things (SINGTEL-AS-AP has -AP suffixes, for example). Is country not a mandatory field after all? Maybe the records where it is missing are just the older records in the db? Enumerating inet-num could be done similarly, although you'd need to decide how you wanted to normalise the results considering that sub- delegations will appear to overlap. > if that's too hard, I'd at least like to find out traffic to Japan, Hong Kong > and Singapore. > > if you would like, I have the list of Philippines IP networks. Yes/no. There are certain objects in the whois database which do not have a full complement of the current mandatory fields (ie, some fields have been made mandatory in recent times). Occasionally I run a few scripts which run through our internal member database (not the whois database) to pull out certain country-related information, and the results are available at: ftp://ftp.apnic.net/pub/apnic/dbase/data/country-asn.lst ftp://ftp.apnic.net/pub/apnic/dbase/data/country-ipv4.lst The script: http://www.apnic.net/apnic-bin/ipv4-by-country.pl displays this data for a given ISO3166 country code. The data available is only applicable to IP/ASNs from the APNIC ranges, ie, if the IP range was allocated pre-APNIC, it is not in that list at the present time. Information on the various fields is given at the top of the file. If using Perl to parse it, use '/\s*:\s*/' as the split() pattern in case the spurious spaces disappear at a future time. The IP ranges have been CIDRised into country code, so the two ranges: 203.97.0.0 to 203.97.127.255 (Clear-NZ) and 203.97.128.0 to 203.97.255.255 (Netgate-NZ) are shown as one block (203.96/15 actually) rather than multiple blocks. It would be nice to say that it would be possible to pull down the relevant portion of the APNIC database and search it - but that doesn't have any historical allocations. And walking through the historical Internic database will take time. I plan to do this (have this done) as part of the Routing Analysis thing I talked about at APRICOT - but I can only see it being time consuming. Note that country registered may not be the country the AS is actually used in, for example. >if that's too hard, I'd at least like to find out traffic to Japan, Hong Kong >and Singapore. > >if you would like, I have the list of Philippines IP networks. If there is interest, and once I've done the regional and pre country breakdown, I could produce a summary for a country along the lines of the one I'm doing for the region so far...? The ASN info that is published weekly suggests that this should be possible. I think the bigger issue is how it might be related to bandwidth and traffic flows; i.e. is there a way to use the ASN/IP to get even a general fix on what is happening to demand in a country or the amount of bandwidth deployed. Perhaps this could be related to some of the major gateways within the country or international gateways in and out. Do you have any comments? My count was published in Telegeography 2000 and there is a previous version that Barry Greene compiled for Telegeography 1999. I have not seen much information that is being compiled on an ongoing basis, although I hope to do another compilation of intercountry bandwidth sometime later this spring. I havae not seen anyone put together this type of information using country ASN/IP numbers, but it would be interesting to take advantage of this type of data. Cc: bgp-stats@whois.apnic.net Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"; format=flowed Sender: owner-apops@lists.apnic.net Precedence: bulk Hi, Following a lot of useful and interesting feedback, especially after the APNIC Routing SIG meeting at APRICOT, I'm planning on enhancing the weekly summary I post to this list. Up to now I've simply been looking at the utilisation based around the APNIC AS and IP address space blocks. However, many ASes were assigned in the AP region by the InterNIC prior to APNIC's existence. The enhancement will include all the ASes which are located in the region. The initial runs I have being doing while developing the additions to the software give an even more interesting picture. Hopefully by the middle of next week the APNIC web site (http://www.apnic.net/stats/bgp) will reflect the changes. For those of you who will be attending IETF in Adelaide, Australia, I hope to give an updated summary at the IEPG meeting to be held on the Sunday before the start of IETF (26th March). best wishes! philip -- -------------------------------------------------------- Philip Smith ph: +61 7 3238 8200 Consulting Engineering, Office of the CTO, Cisco Systems -------------------------------------------------------- * APOPS: Asia Pacific Operations Forum * * To unsubscribe: send "unsubscribe" to apops-request@apnic.net * From owner-apops@lists.apnic.net Fri Mar 17 04:03:35 2000 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by whois.apnic.net (8.9.3/8.9.3) id EAA132280; Fri, 17 Mar 2000 04:03:34 +1000 (EST) Received: from dev.apnic.net (dev.apnic.net [203.37.255.120]) by whois.apnic.net (8.9.3/8.9.3) with ESMTP id EAA90787 for ; Fri, 17 Mar 2000 04:03:30 +1000 (EST) Received: (from cscora@localhost) by dev.apnic.net (8.9.3/8.9.3) id EAA16366 for apops@lists.apnic.net; Fri, 17 Mar 2000 04:03:30 +1000 From: Routing Analysis Message-Id: <200003161803.EAA16366@dev.apnic.net> Subject: [apops] Asia Pacific Weekly Routing Report Date: Fri, 17 Mar 2000 04:03:30 +1000 (EST) Reply-To: bgp-stats@whois.apnic.net To: apops@whois.apnic.net X-Mailer: fastmail [version 2.5 PL1] Sender: owner-apops@lists.apnic.net Precedence: bulk This is an automated weekly mailing sent to the APOPS list describing the state of the Internet Routing Table in the Asia Pacific Region. There are a couple of IP address mapping web sites that attempt to map an IP prefix to a country (or finer). I have heard of a number of ASN to country maps over the years - it strikes me as a decent function that the RIRs could publish as aperiodically updated file that maps _all_ assigned AS numbers to the country of the applicant. However, hopefully you will find this report interesting and will take the time to look through this to see if you can improve the amount of aggregation you perform. The report is split into sections: 0) General Status List the route table history for the last week, list any possibly bogus routes seen and give some status on ASes. 1) Gains by aggregating at the origin AS level This lists the "Top 30" players who if they decided to aggregate their announced classful prefixes at the origin AS level could make a significant difference in the reduction of the current size of the Internet routing table. This calculation does not take into account the inclusion of holes when forming an aggregate so it is possible even larger reduction should be possible. 2) Weekly Delta A summary of the last weeks changes in terms of withdrawn and added routes. Please note that this is only a snapshot but does give some indication of ASes participating in CIDR. Clearly, it is generally a good thing to see a large amont of withdrawls. 3) Interesting aggregates Interesting here means not an aggregate made as a set of classful routes. Thanks to xara.net for giving me access to their routing tables once a day. Please send any comments about this report directly to me.
